KELLY & MEENAGH HAS FOCUSED ON
FOR MORE THAN A QUARTER CENTURY
The Poughkeepsie, New York law firm of Kelly & Meenagh, LLP was established in April 1992 by Thomas F. Kelly, III and John P. Meenagh, Jr., each of whom had been admitted to practice law in the State of New York in 1981. For over a quarter century, Kelly & Meenagh has maintained a consistently active personal injury litigation practice representing both clients who have been the victim of the negligence of others as well as defending the insurance companies involved in such cases. In addition, the firm has handled the legal affairs of such high-profile clients as the City and Town of Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County and the State of New York.
The firm supports all types of personal injury actions from automobile, workplace and slip-and-fall accidents to dog bites, defective products, professional liability and wrongful death cases. The firm has also been involved with municipal defense against alleged violations of Federal Civil Rights and other civil liability issues. With over 74 years of combined experience, the firm’s founding partners each personally handle all defense cases exclusively from initiation to completion, including declaratory judgment actions regarding coverage issues and other insurance-related matters, as well as a variety of appeals.
At present, we currently have cases pending in the Supreme Court in the counties of Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Orange, Dutchess, Sullivan, Ulster, Columbia, Queens, Manhattan and Suffolk as well as in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.
Even if your case falls outside of our usual geographic region (the greater New York Hudson Valley, including the counties of Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Orange, Dutchess, Sullivan, Ulster and Columbia), please call us so we can discuss the specifics of your case in detail.

OUR HISTORICAL LOCATION
During a brief period in the 1800s, Poughkeepsie aspired to be a Whaling town competitive with such places as Nantucket, Massachusetts. Unfortunately, this phenomenon lasted barely thirteen years from approximately 1832-1845. During that time, prominent local figures like Matthew Vassar who founded Vassar College invested in 2 rival businesses: The Poughkeepsie Whaling Company and the Dutchess Whaling Company, the latter of which established employee residence in what is today's Kelly & Meenagh building on N. Water Street.
With an average of only six whaling ships between the two whaling companies, the onset of the Depression dealt a major blow to both the industry and its investors, fueled by incidents of shipwrecks, dwindling need for whaling products and an overall decline in the whale population. Luckily, the Poughkeepsie region was relatively unscathed by the demise of its whaling industry particularly because of the thriving success of its main industry, agriculture.
However, the 6500 sq. ft. brick structure called the Dutchess Whaling Company Tenant House, circa 1834,
eventually was purchased in the 1990s by Tom Kelly and John Meenagh as an historical base for their newly established law firm, Kelly & Meenagh. The two partners conscientiously preserved every aspect of its history during the building's major restoration and today in addition to their own law firm, houses a number of professional offices and a popular bistro, which is accessible from Dutchess Avenue.
